Ambassador Joey Hood and Minister of Cultural Affairs sign a Memorandum of Understanding

Ambassador Joey Hood and Minister of Cultural Affairs Hayet Guettat Guermazi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to protect Tunisia’s cultural property. The MOU will facilitate technical cooperation between law enforcement, customs officials, and archaeologists of both countries to identify, interdict, and return trafficked cultural heritage from Tunisia. Tunisia now joins its neighboring North African countries in working with the United States to enforce protection of cultural objects from across the region.

The United States is a committed partner in preserving, restoring, and protecting cultural heritage around the world. This five-year agreement strengthens protection for Tunisia’s rich cultural heritage and reinforces our commitment to disrupt the trafficking of Tunisia’s archaeological artifacts and cultural objects worldwide.
