South Africa: Electoral Commission on Results of Municipal By-Elections Held on 25 Jan 2023

During the by-elections contested yesterday in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces, the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) retained seats won in the 2021 Municipal Elections. The ANC retained two seats and EFF retained one seat. 

The new ANC councillors are:

  • Mzekelo Robert Ndikinda, in ward 05, Mbhashe Municipality – EC121, Eastern Cape. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 76,93% of the total votes cast compared to 77,50% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 43,08%.
  • Sebolaishi Anikie Maputla, in ward 17, Blouberg Municipality – LIM351, Limpopo. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 51,20% of the total votes cast compared to 77,55% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 61,92%.

The new EFF councillor is:

  • Jacob Segodi Seshoka, in ward 10, Polokwane Municipality – LIM354. The party retained its seat won in 2021 Municipal Elections, with 47,27% of the total votes cast compared to 48,32% during the 2021 Municipal Elections. Voter turnout yesterday was 44,18%.
