The efforts to stabilise Eskom and rebuild generation capability through the interventions outlined in the Energy Action Plan are starting to come to fruition, despite challenges.

Some of the key interventions underway to turnaround our energy challenge include Eskom receiving approval to be exempted from the new generation regulations. This will allow the utility to undertake emergency procurement as well as a number of other urgent interventions.

Furthermore, the first phase of the one-stop shop for applicants interested in generation projects will be launched. This is crucial to streamlining the application process and reduce  red tape to quickly bring on board new generation capacity.

Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele, said: “Energy security is the top priority for government and should serve as our focus point. As government together with its partners, we are forging ahead with the Energy Action Plan. We are implementing the Energy Action Plan, and we are seeing some successes, despite challenges that we face along the way.”

The 2023 Budget Speech announcement to move R254 billion of Eskom’s debt onto the balance sheet of government will help stabilise Eskom’s financial position and allow it to undertake the necessary investment and maintenance needed to support security of electricity supply.

Government has noted the mutual agreement between the Eskom Board and outgoing GCEO Andre De Ruyter to vacate his position with immediate effect.

The Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan together with the Eskom board is finalising the appointment of an Acting GCEO and will make an announcement in due course.

Government assures South Africans that there will be no leadership vacuum. The Eskom management team continues with daily operations and work to end load shedding and secure our energy supply continues in earnest.

Government also noted public comments on social media and that De Ruyter’s exit from Eskom is linked to an interview that he had earlier this week.

Government emphasises that there are formal channels, for all government entities, that exist between Executives, Boards, and Ministries, and this includes Eskom. Any concerns or challenges experienced by executives can and should be raised via the formal platforms to enable proper discussions and provide solutions.
