Many countries around the world recorded on Wednesday 29th December an unprecedented increase in cases of coronavirus contamination, due to the scale taken by the omicron variant.
During their briefing on Covid-19, the World Health Organization warned of Omicron and Delta variants as « twin threats » that will lead to « spikes in hospitalisations and deaths », « While there were 1.8 million recorded deaths in 2020, there were 3.5 million in 2021 and we know the actual number is much higher. » Tedros Ghebreyesus added.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization said the pressure on health systems was not only due to new coronavirus patients, but also large numbers of health workers falling ill with Covid.
